How Is SEO Different From SEM?

In a recent talk with Oliver Wood, we asked regarding the difference between what is termed as SEM from the commonly known as SEO. From there we found out that SEM or search engine marketing is just a wider scope in which SEO or search engine optimization is a part of. The goal of both of these processes is to increase a website’s visibility. SEO is just a more focused process which aims to give a page a higher ranking when it comes to search results while SEM is considered to have a wider scope. SEM covers other methods which can be used in increasing traffic to a website including the PPC advertising.

In terms of SEO, there are two most important things that should be considered: the onsite and the offsite. The onsite SEO focuses more on the website’s content and how everything is manages such as the use of keywords, images and formatting. This aims to help the website become more search engine friendly. Offsite SEO, on the other hand, is more focused on getting votes or links from other websites pointing to the client’s site. This is confusing when done by beginner that’s why it is important to hire professionals when dealing with SEO. Offsite SEO is more commonly known as link building and is used in order to build up a website’s trust ranking.

Search Engine Marketing or is SEM has a wider scope compared to SEO which only focuses on both onsite and offsite. Despite having a wider scope, SEM is still another branch of internet marketing as there are other ways that a website’s traffic can be increased aside from using SEO and SEM. SEM can be done by either getting traffic through free or paid advertising. When it comes to paid advertising, a business won’t have to worry about optimizing their website but rather buying a space in the search engine results in order to have a higher ranking. When it comes to paid advertising, Goodgle Adwords is most commonly used by business. With this, your site will be linked through ads appearing on the Google search result and you only have to pay for the amount of clicks the ads get.
